Opening in 1873, the prestigious Nikko Kanaya Hotel is the oldest existing luxury hotel of its kind, in all of Japan. This resort hotel has been registered as a Tangible Cultural Property and is celebrated for its seamless blending of Japanese and Western cultures and styles.
Located in Nikko, this exclusive resort is nearby the UNESCO World Heritage, Toshogu Shrine, and has been considered very much a jewel of hospitality for guests at home and abroad. Dr. James Curtis Hepburn (1815 – 1911), one of the first physicians permitted to live and practice medicine in Japan. Founder of the Hepburn School which later became Meiji Gakuin University. Hepburn is the creator of a Japanese-English dictionary which became the standard reference for students of the Japanese language.
Isabella Bird (1831 – 1904), a world-wide explorer and writer. She was the first woman to join the Royal Geographical Society and elected for membership of the Royal Photographic Society.
Frank Lloyd Wright (1867 – 1959), the world-renowned architect known for his unifying approaches between structures and their natural surroundings. Having designed more than 1,000 structures over 70 years, Wright also designed The Imperial Hotel, Jiyu Gakuen School, and the Yodokō Guest House.
Robert Koch (1843 – 1910), the winner of the 1905 Nobel Prize for discovering the tuberculosis bacterium and considered a pioneer in microbiology. Dr. Koch’s work in tuberculosis, anthrax, and cholera deepened scientific understanding of microbiology and how they exist and spread.
Soseki Natsume (1867 – 1916), beloved author not only in Japan, but around the world. Novelist of over twenty novels including, Kokoro, Botchan, and I Am a Cat. Scholar and professor of English literature, his image adorned the Japanese 1,000 yen not from 1984 until 2004.
Albert Einstein (1879 – 1955), theoretical physicist and one of the most influential scientists in human history. Known for his theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, and reshaping our modern understandings of modern physics. Winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921.
Paul Claudel (1868 – 1955), French diplomat, poet, and dramatist.
Charles and Anne Lindbergh, (1902 – 1974: Charles), famous American aviator and first to make the nonstop flight from New York to Paris.
Helen Keller (1880 – 1968) and Anne Sullivan (1866 – 1936), Helen Keller was internationally recognized as an advocate and activist for disability rights, as well as being an internationally sought after lecturer. Keller also helped found the American Civil Liberties Union. She is the author of 12 books. Sullivan, Keller’s life-long teacher, friend, and companion was instrumental in supporting Keller’s work over the years.
Shirley MacLaine (born in 1934), American author and actress, MacLaine has had a career of more than 70 years as a public figure and famous actress. Appearing in over 60 films, and numerous television and theater performances, MacLaine is an American icon. She is also a prolific author of 15 books, writing extensively on spirituality and metaphysics.
Jack Nicklaus, (born in 1940), professional golfer and golf-course designer. One of the most successful golfers in the sport, and widely recognized as an authority in golfing.
Princess Anne (born in 1950), daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and sister to King Charles III.
